In 1803, when the canton vaud appeared, the population of Gimel was of 623 inhabitants. In 1862, a hotel and a lot of pensions opened; Gimel opted then for the tourist development.
Currently, the number of inhabitants is of 2421 and two busses connect the village with the line Lausanne-Geneva: the one rising from Rolle, the other one of Allaman via Aubonne.
The village which is essentially composed of farms became an important crafts centre. Traders, state masters, and the new generation of farmers with largely mechanized farms are in good company.
The municipality of Gimel is located on the road to the Marchairuz pass, offering opportunities for hiking, cross-country skiing and other mountain sports and leisure activities.
