La Sarraz, In the Middle of the World
La Sarraz and its medieval castle, horse museum, dominate a vast plain of fields of wheat and rapeseed. It is there, close by, that is the Middle of the world where the mythical Venoge flows towards Lake Geneva.
Perched on a rocky ridge, the small town of La Sarraz (485 m. above sea level) dominates a plain of fields of wheat and rapeseed which face the snowy Alps.
It is located at the limit of the watershed: the waters of the Nozon flow in both the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The point of separation of the waters, an ancient deviation created by man, was named "the Middle of the world". The Venoge was celebrated in a poem by Jean Villars-Gilles that the people of Vaud know by heart.
Festivals and weddings are still celebrated in the medieval castle of La Sarraz, restored with taste. This is where enthusiasts have opened the Horse Museum whose collection traces the horse of stagecoaches, military, sports or art.
